What is Indian OCI?
An Overseas Citizen of India (“OCI”) is essentially a permanent visa for people that were born in India but have now renounced their Indian nationality and citizenship. It is a permanent visa which allows the holder to return to India without any other visa for the rest of their life.
Indian OCI holders are broadly on the same level of economic, financial and educational rights as normal Indian citizens except that they cannot purchase agricultural land. Most persons of Indian origin are eligible to hold OCI with the major exception being that those serving in the armed forces or the ministry of defense of a foreign country are not eligible to hold OCI.
How do you apply for OCI?
The most important requirement for applying for an OCI is proof that you were born in India or previously held Indian nationality. This can usually be achieved by providing a birth certificate, citizenship certificate or previous passports showing that you previously held Indian nationality. Photographs and previous records of marriage also need to be provided.
The application matching the requirements must then be submitted to the consulate with the local jurisdiction of the country concerned. It will be processed by consular services processing center with responsibility for your area.
